Plekanec's goal gives Canadiens 2-1 win in Boston

The Canadiens forward made up for a first-period own goal by scoring the tiebreaker with 9:14 remaining to beat the Bruins 2-1 on Thursday night.
Carey Price stopped 29 shots for Montreal, but he took the blame for giving Boston an early lead when Plekanec won a faceoff and put it straight into his own net.
"I just Bill Bucknered it," Price said. "Just a mental lapse, for sure. I didn't want that to be the winning goal. Our guys did good to get it back and they bailed me out."

Tigers win 11th straight; so does Verlander

Behind seven scoreless innings from Justin Verlander, the Tigers kept steaming toward the AL Central title Tuesday, beating the White Sox 5-0 to extend their winning streak to 11 games.

Detroit is on its first 11-game winning streak since September 9-21, 1968, and leads the White Sox and Indians by 12 1/2 games. The Tigers' magic number to eliminate Chicago is three, while it's four for Cleveland -- which has one fewer loss.
Verlander (23-5), who has won 11 consecutive starts and leads the majors in pitching victories, gave up only six hits and two walks, and struck out six.

Bulls fight off Magic charge for 102-99 victory

Pierce, Celtics outlast Timberwolves

 

MINNEAPOLIS—Another enormous lead had slipped away for the Boston Celtics, and a loss potentially even more damaging than the last awaited.
That's when Paul Pierce shed a whole game's worth of poor shooting and Kevin Garnett followed with two of his go-to moves to finish off his former team.
Pierce had 23 points and seven rebounds, and the Celtics held on for an 85-82 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Sunday night.
Garnett had 13 points, 13 rebounds and thousands of fans who turned out to cheer for the former face of the Timberwolves franchise.

NBC, the partner of the NHL to integrate social media release Winter Classic

 

National Hockey League marketing find it when they held their first Winter Classic in 2008. Hall of Famer, Dodgers legend Duke Snider dies at 84

 

If there is a Bedford Avenue in the hereafter, it's time to board up the windows.
Duke Snider, who spent the prime of his major-league career hitting balls over the Ebbets Field right-field wall onto the busy Brooklyn street beyond, died Sunday of natural causes in Escondido, Calif., at age 84.
"The Duke of Flatbush" was the last living everyday regular from "The Boys of Summer," the fabled Dodger teams of the 1950s that included Brooklyn's only world championship team in 1955. Pitchers Carl Erskine and Don Newcombe are among those who survive.
